One of the most active aircraft carriers of the entire war, the British HMS Royal was involved in the first aerial and U-boat kills of World War II. Incorrectly reported as sunken multiple times, she was eventually fatally struck by the German submarine U-86 in November of 1941. Her wreck was discovered in 2002, 30 miles from Gibraltar.
